The world of chips lands at the Institut d'Estudis Catalans with the exhibition “La revolució silenciosa”

The outreach exhibition commemorating the 75th anniversary of the invention of the transistor, promoted by the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona, arrives at the historical cloister of the IEC by the hand of the Catalan Society of Technology. The researcher Elisabet Prats will give the closing talk on March 6 in a day that will be opened by the president of the SCT, Núria Salán.

The technology exhibition on chips La revolució silenciosa is on display from today, February 1, until March 7 in the cloister of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (C/ del Carme 47, Barcelona). Promoted by the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM, CSIC), it opens now thanks to a collaboration with the Societat Catalana de Tecnologia (SCT-IEC). The opening talk (rescheduled from February 7th) will be held on March 6th in the afternoon.

The exhibition proposes a journey through the history of microelectronics on the occasion of the 75th anniversary of the transistor, which was discovered in December 1947, through six panels that explain the design and manufacturing processes of the transistor and integrated circuits from the beginning to the current digital society. All complemented with materials of the technology developed at the IMB-CNM-CSIC, where you can see silicon stones (base material of the chips), virgin wafers (the substrate on which they are manufactured) and manufactured and encapsulated chips.

The exhibition, carried out in collaboration with the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology of the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities (FECYT), is of free access during the opening hours of the space.

De la ràdio del iaio a la Playstation 5: el transistor fa 75 anys!

Elisabet Prats, CIBER-BBN researcher at the IMB-CNM-CSIC and disseminator of the Big Van Ciencia group, will give the closing conference at the IEC's Sala Nicolau d’Olwer on Wednesday, March 6. The talk, rescheduled from February 7, will take a journey through the history of the transistor, showing the changes it has caused over time in society and its initial and final applications.

Núria Salán, president of the SCT, will welcome and open the event, in which Luis Fonseca, director of the IMB-CNM-CSIC, will also participate.

Un microchip muy grande

The project "Un microxip molt gran" / "Un microchip muy grande" (FCT-21-16975) is organized by the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM) of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) with the collaboration of FECYT. The initiative contemplated different activities with the aim of improving education and generating new scientific vocations among schoolchildren and young non-university students, increasing their learning and interest in electronics and microelectronics. As part of the project, the IMB-CNM organized a competition for students; a series of lectures on the history and future of technology, with invited and in-house speakers; and the exhibition "La revolució silenciosa", which is now on display at the IEC. The initiative celebrates the 75th anniversary of the transistor, a semiconductor electronic device that replaced bulky and inefficient valves.
