The Reial Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona hosts the IMB-CNM exhibition La revolució silenciosa
The exhibition takes a journey through the history of the transistor up to the present day, illustrated by a small exhibition of wafers, xips and everything related to microelectronics and its manufacture, including a radio from the RACAB collection.
The great scientific institution at the center of Barcelona's Rambla, the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona (Reial Acadèmia de Ciències i Arts de Barcelona RACAB), is hosting until June the exhibition La revolució silenciosa, promoted by the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona (IMB-CNM-CSIC) to disseminate the fundamental importance of the transistor in today's society, transmit its knowledge and its history. It can be seen until June 21, in the afternoon on Sundays and in the morning on Sundays, admission is free with prior reservation.
In the octagonal room of the RACAB, you can see silicon rocks, semiconductor substrates on which the chips are manufactured (silicon wafers), cut chips, encapsulated chips and chips inside PCB boards, like the ones we can find inside any electronic device. In addition, RACAB has also exhibited a classic radio that works with vacuum valves (second picture of the gallery), predecessors of the transistor.
The exhibition has six explanatory panels with historical photographs about the evolution of the transistor and microelectronics, as well as its consequences in the digital society, since it was not until the development of the MOSFET type transistor that it was possible to design and manufacture digital circuits for the memories and processors of the computers that would come soon after. This and other data can be learned at the exhibition.
In addition, the programming of the exhibition coincides with the ceremony of reception of Dr. Francesc Pérez Murano, who will occupy the seat of Nanoelectronics (Physics Section) at the Royal Academy of Sciences and Arts of Barcelona, in a ceremony that will take place on Thursday 30 May in the afternoon.
A traveling exhibition to enjoy microelectronics
The silent revolution is an exhibition promoted by the Institute of Microelectronics of Barcelona with the collaboration of the Spanish Foundation for Science and Technology · Ministry of Science and Innovation (FECYT). It is an introduction to the world of microelectronics and the changes that took place from 1947 with the invention of the transistor, as well as a review of the research and development carried out at the IMB-CNM. It gives an answer to several questions related to the technology that is used on a daily basis and what the process of creating its components is like.
The exhibition is traveling and has already been seen in several Barcelona neighborhoods, such as Sants, and universities, such as the UPC or the UAB, and in other places in Vallès, such as the Can Rajoler cultural center in Parets del Vallès, and will continue in the summer at the Ateneu de Fabricació de Les Corts.
