The European Researchers' Night is back with face-to-face activities once again. A public event dedicated to the dissemination of science celebrated around all of Europe and organized in Catalonia through the Associació Catalana de Comunicació Científica. Its aim is to bring research, innovation and its lead actors to the public of all ages in a smooth and fun way.

The event is held every year in more than 300 cities in 30 European countries at the same time. In the previous edition, more than 200 activities were carried out in Catalonia, including talks, workshops, experiments, shows and games.

This year, the IMB-CNM is involved in the following activities:

Science Slam CSIC Catalunya: “Recerca en un món en canvi”

  • "RISC-V: una oportunidad para el hardware abierto y la soberanía tecnológica", by Lluís Terés Terés (ICAS group).
  • Wednesday 22/09, 18:00 – 20:00 at the Residència d'Investigadors (CSIC, Barcelona).

The strategy of offering the ISA RISC-V in open source is a turning point for hardware, as LINUX was for software back in the day. It is an unbeatable opportunity to move towards Open-source Hardware/Software and open an unprecedented open collaborative space between the three basic pillars of technological development: Training, Research and Innovation.

The idea is not to compete, but to open up and collaborate to jointly grow academia and industry and move towards a more competent and collaborative ecosystem. RISC-V opens up and democratizes the world of processors, but its drive can take us much further in terms of open hardware / software and, therefore, help consolidate a good level of technological sovereignty that we are lacking.

This event is coorganized by the CSIC Delegation in Catalunya, the research centers belonging to the CSIC in Catalunya and the Residència d’Investigadors, where the vent will be held (Carrer de l'Hospital, 64, 08001 Barcelona). There will also be an online streaming of the event.

It will also have talks from many CSIC researchers belonging to centers such as IAE, IBB, IBE, ICE, ICM, ICMAB, IDAEA, IMF, IQAC and GEO3BCN. There will be a Kahoot to test the knowledge of the audience and prizes!

You can register now for the event on Eventbrite.

Lluís Terés is involved in the DRAC project, a Barcelona Supercomputing Center-led initiative to develop hardware designed in Europe.

Matí de la Recerca: Consiguiendo baterías biodegradables: electroquímica y microorganismos vivos

  • "Consiguiendo baterías biodegradables: electroquímica y microorganismos vivos", by Carlos Ruiz.
  • Tuesday 21/09, 11:30 – 13:30 at the Escola Pia Granollers (Granollers, Barcelona).

How can living electrochemistry and microorganisms coexist? What is the use of measuring biological activity in different soil matrices and how can we do it? Electrochemistry studies the transformation between chemical reactions that occur between an electrical conductor and an ionic conductor, how can we use it to our advantage to measure the activity of living microorganisms, such as bacteria or protozoa? In this talk, we will see how these two worlds coexist and how they can help generate components that are used in biodegradable batteries, helping to replace batteries with an eco-friendly and sustainable alternative.

Engineer Carlos Ruiz will be in charge of the talk, aimed at high-school students (4º ESO).
